Azerbaijan opens new school building in Vietnam to support students affected by Typhoon Yagi

The opening ceremony of the new wing of the school building, built with the support of the Republic of Azerbaijan, was held in Luc Yen settlement, Lao Cai province (before Yen Bai province), northeastern Vietnam. The building for the Tran Phu primary school was built with the funding of the Azerbaijan International Development Agency (AIDA) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan to support the elimination of the consequences of Typhoon Yagi, which happened on September 7-8, 2024.

The opening ceremony was attended by leaders of Lao Cai province, public representatives, and ambassadors of Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan to Vietnam.

Deputy Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Vu Thi Hien Hanh underlined that the constructed school building has helped improve educational conditions for students of Luc Yen settlement and underlined readiness to continue cooperation in the field of education.

The Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Vietnam, Shovgi Mehdizada, said that there is a great history of friendship between our peoples, and emphasized that the visits of the first President of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, to Azerbaijan in 1959, and the National Leader of Azerbaijani people, Heydar Aliyev, to Vietnam in 1983 as the head of the Soviet delegation as First Deputy Chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers, played an exceptional role in the establishment and strengthening of friendship between our peoples. He drew attention to the rapid development of relations between our countries in recent years, and during the visit of the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, To Lam, to Azerbaijan in May last year, a strategic partnership was established between the two countries, and new opportunities opened up for the development of our cooperation in various fields.

Ambassador Shovgi Mehdizada presented photographs taken during the visits of Ho Chi Minh to Azerbaijan and National Leader Heydar Aliyev to Vietnam to the school, and various books to the students.

The Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Vietnam, Kanat Tumysh, who participated in the event, also presented books to the schoolchildren.

Then, the cover was removed from the plaque that reflected the information about the construction of the school building by Azerbaijan, and participants of the event were familiarized with conditions created in the building.

It should be noted that the first major typhoon of 2024 in the Pacific Ocean, “Yagi”, was the most damaging hurricane in Vietnam in the last 70 years. As a result of the consequences caused by “Yagi”, 325 people died in Vietnam, about 2 thousand people were injured, thousands of houses, administrative and social buildings, infrastructure, and agricultural lands were damaged, and the total financial damage amounted to approximately 3.5 billion US dollars.

Azerbaijani consequently implementing humanitarian projects in VietNam in the field of education. The Heydar Aliyev Foundation, headed by the First Vice-President of Azerbaijan, Mehriban Aliyeva, built a primary school building in the remote Giap Trung settlement of the Ha Giang province of Vietnam in 2018. Last year, during her visit to Vietnam, Leyla Aliyeva visited the Nguyen Dinh Chieu Secondary School for visually impaired children in Hanoi and Hanoi College for Tourism and Commerce, with support project to educational institutions.

Before the opening ceremony, Ambassadors met with Chairman of the People's Committee of Lao Cai Province, Nguyen Tuan Anh, gratitude was expressed to Azerbaijan for the support and further continue of cooperation. The rector of Hanoi College for Tourism and Commerce Dr. Trinh Thi Thu Ha also participated in the meeting with the plan to cooperate in training culinary and hospitality with the province.

As part of the visit, a social protection center in Lao Cai Province was also visited.
